The Science of Law

Founded in 1982, the year in which Tor Vergata University of Rome was established, the Faculty of Law has been transformed into a single Department that provides two degree courses, a School of Specialisation in legal professions, Master and PhD programmes. Since 2018 the premises have been located near the modern Rectorate of the University, in an area equipped with technologically advanced infrastructures and free of architectural barriers.

The Department offers two degree courses:

1. Master's degree in Law (single-cycle degree: 5 years - lessons are held at the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’ and at the University of Rome ‘Foro Italico’).
The course aims to train qualified lawyers, with particular attention to the professions of attorney-at-law, judge and notary (of Italian law), public or private employment as well as areas such as banking, finance, insurance. It is a highly effective degree course for job prospects: according to the survey of Almalaurea (2018), after 5 years from graduation, law graduates from Tor Vergata University have, in comparison with the graduates from the other universities of Central Italy, the highest employment rate (79.5%), average wage (€ 1658,00/month) and satisfaction for the efficacy of the acquired knowledge in their work.
After graduation, students can continue their studies by applying for the School of Specialisation in legal professions and for PhDs programmes in public law, private law, legal history and legal philosophy (Diritto pubblico; Diritto e tutela: esperienza contemporanea, comparazione e sistema giuridico romanistico) or enrolling in a 2nd level professional Master programme.

2. Bachelor’s degree in Administration and International Relations.
The course prepares students to work in various fields such as Public Administration and the wider public sector, business and business strategies, international relations, communication and marketing.

Botanic Gardens
The greenhouse of succulents

The Succulent Plants greenhouse houses the collection of the Botanical Garden born thanks to the precious donations of some Private. The donations of succulent plants include more than 400 different species, all born and raised in captivity, most of which are CITES species in appendix II (Washington Convention and Law 19th December 1975, n.874).
The interior design of the Greenhouse reproduces the different habitats where the housed species belong. The reconstruction has concerned not only the aesthetics of the surface but also the choice of the cultivation soil that mimics the environment of origin of the various species. In fact, a "Wild" cultivation technique has been chosen to allow plants a development more closely to what they would appear in nature. This maximizes and makes clear the adaptations that plants put in place for survival in extreme climatic conditions.
The interior of the Greenhouse is ideally divided into three geographical zones: Africa on the West side (left), South America on the South-East side (right) and Mexico on the North-East side (right). The different zones belonging to the groups of plants are highlighted.
The exterior of the Greenhouse lodge several kinds of cold hardy plants like Opuntia, Agave, Dasylirion ed Echinocereus and also Ferocactus, Aloe, Mammillaria and Echinopsis.

Other Facilities, Gardens and Plants Collections are:

Arboretum: The Arboretum aims the study and dissemination of knowledge on biodiversity is therefore proposed as a permanent Environmental Education Centre. In 2010 started the initiative "Adopt a Tree" which is enjoying great success in involving schools, students, staff of the university and citizens of the area. Until today thanks to this initiative were planted about 750 plants covering an area of 5 hectares.

Germplasm Conservation Centre: an experimental nursery and seed bank for the conservation of wild native species and food and medicinal herbs. The centre has advanced technology for the micropropagation and the restoration of damaged habitat. The research currently focuses on recovery, molecular characterization, and propagation of old varieties, creating a system of plant cultivation in permanent contact with the productive world.

Theme Gardens.
Biblical Garden: The Garden was planted in 2000 during the “World Youth Day”. In the Garden you can find the species mentioned in the Bible such as Quercus macrolepis Kotschy, Cedrus libani A.Rich., Pinus halepensis Mill., Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Sieb., etc.

Garden of Music with the plant species used in making musical instruments and plants that have inspired works of classical and modern music.

Garden of Well-Being. This area has been designed to accommodate frail people for green therapy projects. Today there are many people who benefit from these workshops and who face a rehabilitation and social inclusion path with us.

Plant collections:
Oaks (164 species)
Carnivorous plants (39 species and 21 varieties)
Gymnosperm (40 species)
Succulents (500 species)
Dogwoods (70 varieties and 25 species)

Botanic Gardens
The kingdom of plants

The vast area of 82 hectares where the project take place represent an example of integration between science and civil society. This new concept of botanical garden wants to combine different aspects such as teaching, research, innovation, and industrial development. To reach its objectives, Tor Vergata Botanic Gardens has pursued different vocations.

1) Scientific institution, the Garden serves as a ground for taxonomy, morphology, plant physiology, genetics, ecology, and biotechnology, conducted by the team of botanists along with professors and researchers from the Department of Biology of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, affiliated with the Garden. Our current research fields are carbon footprint, chemical composition and biological activities of herbs extracts, germplasm conservation of native species of agroindustrial interest, experimental nursery of native species, medicinal herbs, phytoremediation, innovative fertilizer for sustanibility and green therapy.

2) Cultural institution, it takes visitors on a voyage through the plant world, inviting them to explore the various outside gardens: biblical garden and different aspects of the native vegetation (Mediterranean Maquis, Mesophilous Wood, Ilex Wood) and in the future to discover different cultures with the realization of formal gardens. Moreover, the team of the garden organize different topic days to introduce people to the world of plants.

3) Educational institution, the Garden is a unique training ground, with numerous educational activities.
