Description and Teaching Objectives
This Degree aims at training engineers with expertise in areas of mechanical system engineering, industrial plants, machines, technologies and materials.
Starting with the acquisition of basic knowledge in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, this curriculum foresees modelling and methodological development leading to specialist classes on project design. Methodological and operational aspects of basic sciences are conveyed through classes and then used to describe and solve typical engineering problems. Studying and solving engineering problems via a typical methodological engineering approach is particularly important. This is based on problem analysis, planning experiments or numerical analysis, and the analysis of both results and their impact on the social, physical and environmental context.
More specialised teachings deal with typical aspects of Mechanical Engineering highlighting organisational, managerial, professional and ethical issues. The ability to effectively communicate in English both in writing and orally is acquired during the whole training through papers, ongoing tests, oral exams and the draft of a final dissertation. Moreover, for several classes such training requires the use of specialised texts and scientific publications in English, which can help improve communication skills in international scientific contexts.
At the end of the course students can: set and perform experiments analysing and interpreting data; understand the impact of engineering solutions in social, physical and environmental contexts; recognise professional and ethical responsibilities, as well as the contemporary company fields they may operate in; have interpersonal and decision-making skills; effectively communicate orally, in writing and in an international context; use basic cognitive tools for lifelong learning and be able to learn through self-study.
Typical professional fields for graduates include: product and process design, production, management and organisation, assistance, technical and commercial facilities; they may operate as freelancers or in manufacturing, services and public administrations. Particularly relevant tasks cover: design of mechanical and thermomechanical systems; design and implementation of production processes and industrial plants; direction and management of production processes; plant management and control; innovation development and management.
