Description and Teaching Objectives
This Degree trains professionals working in control and automation for systems and processes, robotics and space exploration.
It involves the study of specific topics in Control Theory, Robotics and Automation, as well as many interdisciplinary topics since automation engineers must often interact with specialists in further Engineering fields. In particular, subjects include: continuous-time, discrete-time and discrete event dynamical systems; automation of industrial processes; factory and motion automation; industrial and space robotics; control system design for electrical machinery and endothermic engines; control design for mechanical systems; design of satellite control systems; dynamics and control of industrial and service robots; design of devices and systems for dynamic controls of plants and production systems; modelling and control for ecological and social systems.
Training objectives involve the use of techniques and methods for basic sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science) to interpret and describe engineering problems though models, focusing on Automation Engineering. Particular reference is made to drafting formal models for processes and systems, their simulation and laws/control strategies.
All activities - many of which are carried out in laboratories - convey the skills needed to perform experiments and analyse data though computer-aided methods. This aims at characterising the process through a mathematical model. The so obtained models have different complexity levels and represent a basis for planning purposes: to this end analysis and synthesis phases follow one another so that students learn both classical and consolidated techniques in the industrial sector as well as many recently developed tools based on innovative technologies.
One teaching objective is fundamental: providing students with the necessary tools for constant knowledge update, either through further PhD studies or through individual learning on specialised scientific books and journals.

Career Opportunities
Graduates in Automation Engineering can work in multiple sectors whenever there is a need for skills in control and automation of systems and processes, robotics and space activities, in companies as well as public and private research institutions. At present such skills are highly requested in Italy and abroad, particularly at a European level.
Examples of professional profiles include: project engineer for control systems in companies operating in industrial production, design of automation systems, energy transformation and distribution, petrochemical and pharmaceutical plants; researcher in a number of areas (including nuclear and space sectors).
Automation engineers master skills allowing them to work in four main areas: companies producing and supplying automation systems; businesses and companies using automated production systems or managing highly complex services; engineering and consulting companies which study and design complex, technologically sophisticated plants and systems; research institutions especially in the energy and space sector.
Automation engineers can find employment in all industries, companies and institutions in which prediction, diagnosis, control and decision support systems are technologically relevant.
