Description and Teaching Objectives
The course fits in the cultural and educational space of Advanced Biology, i.e. the study of complex relations in the living world. It aims at training specialists able to deal with environmental problems ranging from conservation to sustainable management of renewable resources, as well as specialists able to use their knowledge in biology and human evolution in forensic and archaeology-anthropological areas.
This course provides students with:
- Solid cultural skills in basic and applied biology; high-quality scientific and operational training in biological disciplines; thorough knowledge of instrumental methods, analytical tools and techniques for data collection and analysis.
- Knowledge on advanced topics of plant and animal biology, biological evolution and ecology. Knowledge about ecological applications and principles of biological evolution in order to apply causal interpretation of biodiversity patterns to genomes, organisms, populations, communities and ecosystems. Knowledge about ecosystem theories and their ecological models and applications to support scientific and technological innovation.
- Strong skills regarding the biological characteristics of the human species to be applied in biomedical, medical-legal and evolutionary fields; they can also underpin the conservation of our demo-ethnic-anthropological heritage. Skills related to DNA retrieval, extraction and analysis methods on contemporary and archaeological materials via modern molecular analysis techniques.
- Skills to deal with problems through a systemic and multidisciplinary approach with particular reference to managing relations with the economic, social and legal sides of ecological issues. Skills to use their knowledge in certification systems, decision making support in public administration, private sectors and environmental education programmes.
Applications of ecology and principles of biological evolution to biodiversity enhancement, conservation and management.
Applications of ecology and principles of evolutionary biology to some aspects of medicine and public health.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can: work in public or private structures; use their knowledge for highly professional purposes, i.e. promotion, design and development of scientific and technological innovation; work in human and ecological sectors; work on certification systems and quality control.
Such structures can be: universities; research centres; superintendencies; museums; local health units; analysis laboratories; analysis laboratories for biological findings of the State Police and Carabinieri; public and private bodies responsible for environmental issues (Environmental Agencies, Regions, Provinces, Municipalities, parks or nature reserves); professional practices assessing and monitoring environmental impacts; farms and fisheries where environmental issues cover scientific and technological innovation; production chains; certification and control systems; development cooperation in NGOs and governmental organisations.
Graduates may enroll into PhDs.
They may: work as freelancer after subscribing to the National Register of Biologists; teach in secondary schools; deal with popular science.
