Description and Teaching Objectives
A Master Degree in Interclass Archaeology, Philology, Literature and History of the Ancient World provides training in Archaeology, Philology and History as far as the wide timespan ranging from Prehistory to the Middle Ages is concerned. Both methods and subject contents are highly regarded.
Students follow a path within one of the two Master Degree Classes: both Class LM-2 and LM-15 train graduates who can properly perform high-responsibility tasks in areas belonging to the cultural industry and of historical, archaeological and humanistic interest.
Graduates shall demonstrate their analysis and synthesis skills on the main issues related to studying the ancient world - from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. They shall autonomously master a combination of historical-artistic, archaeological and philological disciplines and use the most advanced technical equipment. Theoretical knowledge will be acquired through traditional lectures as well as seminars, workshops, laboratories, and activities on the field to develop students’ critical thinking and train them to solve the problems linked to archaeological heritage management and conservation. This course offers an in-depth analysis of specific problems relating to different archaeological sectors.
Lectures held in museums, archaeological and monumental areas favour the understanding of museum and museography issues.
Active participation in excavations provides students with practical knowledge about research methods and archaeological heritage management. Particular attention is given to training on methods and archaeological research tools (geophysical analysis, archaeometry, graphical documentation of finds, topographic and archaeological surveys), focusing on the latest technologies (computer tools for documentation, filing, management and processing of alphanumeric and cartographic data).
For this reason basic computer skills represent an enrolment pre-requisite.
Furthermore, cutting-edge methods relating to Geophysics applied to Cultural Heritage are properly dealt with and explained in dedicated classes (ground-penetrating radars, electromagnetic prospecting, three-dimensional reconstructions through digital photographic shootings).
Career Opportunities
High-responsibility positions in museums, superintendencies, archives, libraries, cultural centres etc., as well as management and/or specialist advice for some sectors of the cultural industry such as communication, entertainment and exhibitions. Research positions in Archaeology, Classical and Medieval Philology and Ancient History within universities and research institutes.
Courses under Class LM 2 train: academics active in universities or research institutes in the field of Cultural Heritage; archaeologists workings as officials responsible for museum display, protection and enhancement of archaeological heritage belonging to government and local authorities; managers and/or operators in the field of archaeological heritage protection and enhancement for the private sector; operators working in archaeological technical publishing and journalism, companies, cooperatives and agencies responsible for archaeological heritage conservation.
Courses under Class LM 15 train graduates who can: give expert advice in cultural, communication and entertainment industries, both public and private (e.g. Municipalities, Provinces, Regions, foundations); work in archives and libraries as curators for manuscripts and valuable material; submit their application to become teachers of literary subjects, Latin and Greek in a Liceo Classico (i.e. high school focusing on humanities).
