Descrizione e obiettivi formativi

Society, politics, and knights in Italian communes The history of the communes in central and northern Italy is one of the most investigated topics by scholars of medieval Italy. However, in the last twenty years the history of the communal age has witnessed a profound renewal of study models and interpretative paradigms. This course illustrates not only the main aspects of Italian communal history, but also the most recent interpretative innovations. In particular, the analysis of the social, institutional and cultural changes that characterised Italian communal cities between the beginning of the 12th and the end of the 13th century has given great weight to the problem of war and conflict, and to the social group - the so-called 'militia', i.e. the class of city knights - that was for a long time hegemonic on the communal scene precisely thanks to its active participation in combat. The course is addressed to students who intend to acquire 12 credits in medieval history in the academic year 2021-2022. Students willing to acquire only 6 credits should instead contact professor Federico Del Tredici (federico.del.tredici@uniroma2.it)

THE DORIA PAMPHILJ COLLECTION FROM THE 17CENTURY TO THE PRESENT DAY: ITS ROLE FOR THE MUSEUMS OF ANTIQUITIES IN ROME AND ABROAD The course aims to introduce students to the theme of the development of Antiquities museums through a case study, that of the Doria-Pamphilj collection. The ancient sculptures collected in the villa outside Porta San Pancrazio by the Pamphilj family is an example of Roman collecting of the seventeenth century that has, over time, given rise to some museums. In 1644 under the direction of Alessandro Algardi, one of the most important open-air museums of the Baroque period was created, the Casino del Belrespiro on the Janiculum (from 1989 the seat of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Italian Government). The Casino had in its interior an extraordinary number of ancient sculptures and in the four facades still displays a refined and rich sample of ancient art at the limit of horror vacui. Antiquities were also arranged in the fountains of the gardens, which were partly housed in the recent setting up of the Villa Vecchia Territorial Museum, the first Roman municipal museum dedicated to a historical villa. The methods of formation of the seventeenth-century collection will be presented, through purchases from the antiquarian market and the contemporary archaeological discoveries in Rome (Hadrianeum, Celio, Quirinale) and in Latium (Anzio, Ostia, Tivoli). For the second aspect, particular attention will be given to the findngs that have come to light during the period of construction of the Bel Respiro Casino and later when important burial areas have been diggeg up. Special attention will be paid to the restorations supervised by Algardi, who often transformed the iconography of ancient sculptures for decorative and programmatic needs. The collection was continually being transformed and from 18th century began the sales in the art market. For this reason the Pamphilj antiquities are today in the Capitoline Museums, in the Dresden State Museums, at the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, in Ince Blundell Hall, in Newby Hall. But the main change occurred in the nineteenth century: a lot of sculptures were moved from the villa to the Doria-Pamphilj Palace at the Collegio Romano, today Galleria Doria-Pamphilj which, although private, is regularly open to the public. Another lot was sold abroad (Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek of Copenhagen and the Liebghaus of Frankfurt). In the end, we will consider the last important phase of the collection: the new discoveries in Albanum, the setting up of Andrea Busiri Vici and the cultural choise of the Prince Filippo Andrea V Doria Pamphilj who promoted a new Museum of Antiquity in the center of Rome.
Mesopotamia and Syria, we will continue studying the Meddle Bronze Age on Mesopotamia, Syria and Anatolia to conclude at the beginning of the early Late Bronze Age with the Hurrians and the Hittite Empire.
Sources for Roman History. During the course, a series of literary, epigraphic, papyrological, and legal texts pertinent to the history of ancient Rome will be analyzed.

The course will focus on public law topics. Following a chronological order, we will examine the legal and literary sources that testify to the main passages in the history of the Roman constitution. The periodization - archaic, republic, principality, dominated, late antiquity, the Justinian period - will be divided into traditional conceptual grids, to allow the student to better relate to the most widespread institutional manuals of the history of Roman law, as well as to any previous knowledge acquired during the attendance of three-year degree courses or courses in Roman history of the present degree course.
