Description and Teaching Objectives
This Degree aims at training professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to perform activities in the supply, adjustment and control of prosthetic devices to prevent and correct auditory deficits. Graduates can choose and propose complex technological solutions for auditory rehabilitation, which is a field in constant evolution. This is done pursuant to healthcare standards in force and thanks to the knowledge acquired via university education, expertise in the field, updates and lifelong learning. Graduates shall be able to cooperate with otorhinolaryngologists or audiologists and implement the newest technologies; they especially focus on implantable prosthesis and cochlear implants, as well as on their fitting and mapping.
Hence, this Degree provides broad understanding of basic knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology, Patho-physiology and clinical analysis of hearing and vestibular systems, but also of the physical and psychophysical measures used in audiological diagnosis as well as principles of perception and production of language sounds.
Such education includes thorough analysis of disciplines such as: basic audiometric techniques, issues of audiological interest relating to modern instruments for audiological diagnosis, acoustic prostheses (including implantable prostheses and cochlear implants), medical and legal issues and damage caused by environmental noise. Furthermore, hearing aid specialists shall master communication aid measures and their interconnection modes (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc). Particular attention is given to counselling and patient interaction as they are crucial factors for rehabilitation processes to be successful.
Course attendance is mandatory for all activities - both theoretical classes and traineeship.
Career Opportunities
This Degree qualifies graduates as Hearing Aid Specialists, i.e. healthcare operators who deal with supply, adjustment and control of prosthetic devices for auditory deficit prevention and correction. Graduates follow doctors' prescriptions and operate on hearing aids as well as on all devices designed to correct hearing impairment and to prevent its effects. In particular, they choose and apply prosthetic devices, hence evaluating relevant technical parameters, supply, adjustment and control. Hearing aid specialists must know how to establish an empathetic relationship with their users when performing interventions of preventive, rehabilitative, technical and relational nature. They shall collaborate with other professionals in prevention and rehabilitation programmes against hearing loss through the provision of prosthetic devices and relevant training.
They can carry out their professional activities in public or private healthcare facilities as freelancers or employees.
