Description and Teaching Objectives
This Degree focuses on training professionals mastering knowledge and application practices in Dietetics, as expected from them and provided for in their code of ethics. In particular, it aims at shaping health professionals who are experts in all activities related to nutrition and balanced diets, including educational aspects and cooperation in food policy complying with regulations in force. Pursuant to Act No 251(3;1) of August 10th, 2000 graduates are health operators in technical diagnostics and technical assistance. They can work autonomously in healthcare and technical activities, hence implementing provisions and regulations concerning the identification of professional figures and profiles defined by a Decree of the Italian Health Ministry. Such training includes: adequate preparation in basic and specialist disciplines allowing graduate dietitians to promote and maintain a healthy and correct diet; they work with individuals and groups of people, hence understanding the physiological and biochemical causes of pathological processes that develop in childhood, adolescence, adult and geriatric age on which their technical assistance focuses; awareness in terms of health problems in communities and responses by health-care and social services to major food and nutrition needs; knowledge of psycho-pedagogical fundamentals of teaching and learning activities in lifelong learning; knowledge of the main rules governing this profession as well as relevant medical and legal implications; capability to establish effective and ethically correct working relationships with patients, other professionals as part of a health-care team and within health-care facilities requiring professional expertise.
Such professional skills are acquired through theoretical and practical training in order to ensure complete mastery of all necessary skills and their immediate application in the workplace after graduating. Furthermore, this Degree provides knowledge regarding all sections of the code of ethics (National Dietitians Association).
Career Opportunities
Graduates can organise and coordinate specific activities relating to food with focus on Dietetics; they cooperate with bodies responsible for health and hygiene protection in food services; they draft, formulate and implement diets prescribed by doctors and monitor patient acceptance; they collaborate with other professionals in cross-cutting treatment of eating disorders; they elaborate daily diets to meet the nutritional needs of population groups and schedule the organisation of community food services for healthy and sick individuals; they carry out educational, training and information activities aimed at disseminating the principles of a correct diet to help individuals, communities and population groups achieve and maintain a good health status. They can train health and non-health personnel and directly participate in training and updating research relating to their professional profile.
Graduates can be employed in National Health Service facilities, public bodies (municipalities, province and regional administration), private facilities (catering companies, food industry, private health-care facilities), research laboratories. Moreover, they can work as freelancers.
