Description and Teaching Objectives
This Degree falls under the classes of Historical Science (LM84) and Archival and Library Science (LM5). According to a well-established academic tradition, it offers a kind of education designed to integrate skills and methods of historical research with critical use and treatment of documentary sources.
There are two curricula to choose from: History and Sources Studies and European History (English-taught). When enrolling students are required to choose the curriculum and class they wish to graduate in, which may eventually change during the second year.
60 ECTS must be acquired in relation to common mandatory, relevant classes. These allow students to get wide and solid training in basic historical disciplines, as well as in disciplines relating to conservation and use of documentary sources for historical research.
Elective classes include a wide range of scientific-disciplinary areas, so that students can specialise in their class (deepening knowledge and methods useful for historical research and applications in the field of source management). Furthermore, they can acquire the skills needed to teach in secondary schools. In particular, students can deepen their specialisation in historical studies of medieval, modern or contemporary times in all their dimensions, including the economic, international, historical and religious ones; they can specialise in Science and Techniques of Documentary Sources Treatment (Archival Science, Library Science, Bibliography, Palaeography, Diplomatics, Archaeology); students get the opportunity to attend an MA in ‘European History’ in a circuit of European universities, hence achieving an international title.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can perform highly qualified professional activities in: cultural institutions or bodies working in the field of historical research; cultural heritage management, protection and preservation with focus on archive and library heritage in a traditional or technologically advanced way (libraries, documentation centres, bibliographical services, archives, archival superintendences). Furthermore, they can: pursue a career in higher education and research; carry out professional activities at public and private institutions responsible for cultural services and recovery of local traditions and identities; work in communication, journalism and publishing, in particular relating to the dissemination of information and of high historical and literary culture.
Working opportunities include: managerial careers in public administration and in local authorities; in general, access to all professional fields requiring broad and flexible cultural education.
