Professor Mark Thomson, Executive Director STFC (UK)
The event announces and celebrates four decades of continuous collaboration and friendship between the University of Rome Tor Vergata and ISIS neutron and muon source (UK) of the Science Technology Facilities Council (STFC-UK).
The first collaboration between the University of Rome Tor Vergata dates back to 1984. Over these 40 years, our partnership has strengthened, promoting innovation in analytical tools, scientific excellence, and mutual growth:
more than 500 researchers from Tor Vergata have conducted experiments at ISIS for a wide range of materials studies, resulting in over 250 research publications;
researchers from Tor Vergata have collaborated with ISIS on the design and construction of seven neutron instruments built at the UK facility.
Since 2018, a total of over 540 days of measurement time for experiments at ISIS has been awarded to Tor Vergata users on a competitive basis (peer review).
We continue to share a common commitment to promoting academic excellence, scientific progress, the advancement of neutron and muon techniques, and the development of early-career researchers.
Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones in various fields, including scientific collaboration in biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and medicine, in areas such as biomaterials, engineering materials, energy, medicine, and cultural heritage.
Numerous PhD students and post-docs from Tor Vergata have spent training periods at ISIS, and ISIS Scientist Visiting Professors have been hosted at the Departments and Doctoral Schools of the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
We will celebrate the 40th anniversary of this important collaboration on 29 October 2024 with an event at the 29 ottobre 2024, Aula TL - Building A, Faculty of Economics, Via Columbia 2, at 2.00 pm, with the participation of:
- Prof Nathan Levialdi Ghiron, (Rector of Tor Vergata University of Rome);
- Prof. Mark Thomson* (Executive Chairman of STFC - UK);
- Dr Philip King (Deputy Director of the ISIS Facility of STFC - UK);
The event will bring together scientists, technical and administrative staff and those who have supported the collaboration from both Italy and the ISIS Facility, for a meeting to reflect on our shared history, celebrate our successes and imagine an even brighter future.
Join us in celebrating this journey of partnership and collaboration.
