Materials Science studies the properties and the production of new materials made possible by Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies: founded in the second half of the 20th century, it is an interdisciplinary research area of Materials Physics and Chemistry, Biology and Engineering. Progress in this field is of vital importance for the electronics industry, communication, medicine, the textile industry, energy and the environment.
This Degree aims at providing a solid basic training including a balanced mixture of Physics and Chemistry notions to understand the fundamental characteristics of the wide range of materials available today. Classes in the first three semesters aim at providing students with basic knowledge in Physics (Mechanics, Electromagnetism and Measurement Theory), Chemistry (General, Inorganic and Organic), Mathematics (Calculus and Geometry) and Informatics, all of which are essential to the understanding of more technical Chemistry and Physics classes to be held in subsequent semesters.
In the fourth and fifth semester courses related to the understanding of Quantum Mechanics, Electronics, Physical Chemistry and Chemistry of Solids will be organised. The last semester is spent completing knowledge on condensed matter through Physics of Solids and Physics of Materials classes. Furthermore, an external internship aimed at developing student skills is mandatory. All above-mentioned courses are completed with laboratory activities.
Graduates in Materials Sciences can directly access a Master Degree in Science and Technology of Materials. Moreover, having acquired experimental scientific knowledge, they will be able to carry out activities relating to the following functions: physical and chemical characterisation of materials; synthesis of inorganic and polymeric materials; quality controls on materials, products and processes.
The industrial sectors interested in such professional figures are primarily manufacturing ones involved in the production of goods with chemical, mechanical, aeronautical or electronic characteristics. Further manufacturing sectors for environmental improvement, energy saving and cultural heritage conservation shall be mentioned as well.
