Description and Teaching Objectives
The course aims at forming professional doctors with biomedical and psychosocial knowledge as well as a multidisciplinary, integrated vision of the problems linked to health and diseases. They shall have an open approach to communities, local areas, prevention and health promotion.
A mission that adequately responds to the new needs in terms of health and health care: it focuses on patients, who are considered as a unity of psyche and soma and are analysed in their social context. Furthermore, such medical training is also considered as the first step of a long-lasting education: the notions students must acquire during this stage are gauged according to this vision. Hence, proper importance is given to self-learning, epidemiology and experiences both in hospitals and in the field. This way clinical reasoning and prevention culture are developed.
A strongly integrated didactic organisation was planned: it is flexible and editable, a true scientific experimentation laboratory aiming at fostering the students’ capability of gaining knowledge. Such knowledge should not be fragmented but integrated, and it should be kept alive not only in the short term but also in the long run. Students are the linchpin of the educational process on which teaching is planned and the whole curriculum is improved, leading to the enhancement of autonomous initiatives.
Through certified traineeships based on tutorial teaching students are provided with strong clinical knowledge to build on, along with a deep understanding of the medical-scientific method and human sciences. True professional skills are reached only after long practice and contact with patients. Such aspects are promoted from the very first year and they are integrated with basic and clinical sciences throughout the course thanks to a broad use of tutorials.
