Description and Teaching Objectives
This Degree follows a tradition of humanistic studies that cannot be separated from foreign language teaching tailored to the needs of contemporary society.
The course aims at providing students with in-depth linguistic knowledge through methods which are constantly updated according to new trends in Language Education.
It focuses on the study of two foreign languages (to be chosen out of English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Russian) and of an additional third language (to be chosen by students too) in order to complete students’ educational profiles. This is useful for their future employment within international bodies and institutions, for linguistic mediation and teaching.
This curriculum insists on the idea of language skills closely related to literary knowledge. This means that the acquisition of foreign languages is integrated with the history, culture and theory of the language itself, with the analysis of its varieties in different literary and geographical contexts and with its use on a communicative level. Classes of History of Literature are supported by textual analysis and the study of vocabulary and language structures, which consolidate students’ cultural education.
Training objectives include: achieving solid cultural preparation in Humanities; good oral and written command of two foreign languages and decent skills in a third language; solid knowledge of the literary and cultural landscape of the studied foreign languages; adequate competence of Italian Linguistics, language and literature; good operational skills in Information Technology and electronic communication, with reference to their possible applications in Humanities.
Career Opportunities
Professional opportunities for graduates include employment in: public and private institutions; areas of cultural services; journalism; traditional and electronic publishing; cultural institutes of various kind; mediation between European cultures as well as between European and American and Asian ones in multiethnic and multicultural contexts.
Graduates can perform a number of functions: some more oriented towards language skills (such as working with the public in offices with counters for foreigners, airlines, accommodation centres, facilities and services for tourism services, etc,); some others towards literary skills (in libraries: ranging from managers of certain collections within a Purchasing Department to room staff; in publishing houses: editors, translators, revisor for texts translated by others, press officers, officers in charge of contacts with agencies holding copyright rights). Graduates can find employment within foreign cultural institutes in Italy and within Italian ones abroad.
