Description and Teaching Objectives
This Degree implements a programme aimed at enabling students to develop and show skills related to rehabilitation methods for pathologies causing voice and speech disorders, oral and written language disorders as well as communication disabilities in developing age, adulthood and geriatric age. Students have the chance to continue their studies until postgraduate research programmes, which is ensured by a comprehensive training project in key areas of communication and language sciences as well as recovery (impairment of neurological, neuropsychological, phoniatric, otorhinolaryngological nature etc.). The course aims at training professionals capable of designing and implementing prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, speech rehabilitation therapy and tutoring.
Its priority is a theoretical-practical study of Speech Therapy through lectures, tutorials, workshops and professional traineeships in Speech Therapy sectors, e.g. assessment and functional recovery of communication, speech and swallowing in all age groups and rehabilitation contexts. Knowledge and skills needed to interact with users, families, institutional and professional systems to acquire key behaviours and attitudes in therapeutic relationships and in cooperating with multidisciplinary teams: those aspects are developed through education in humanities, psycho-pedagogical subjects and personal training during students’ traineeships.
Course attendance is mandatory for all activities - both theoretical classes and traineeship.
Career Opportunities
This Degree qualifies graduates as healthcare operators, i.e. as Speech Therapists who can operate within the Italian National Health Service as employees or freelancers. Furthermore, they can find occupation in private credited hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centres, as well as in State educational facilities or local authorities.
Speech Therapists perform therapeutic activities on their own or in multidisciplinary teams to re-educate individuals with communicative and cognitive disabilities via speech therapies enabling and rehabilitating communication and language, both verbal and non-verbal. They put forth help measures, train staff and assess their effectiveness; perform studies, education and professional advice; check if the implemented rehabilitation methods and functional recovery objectives match.
