The course, organised into centuries, schools and artistic tendencies, will be focused on topics that are essential to understand the role of drawing in the evolution of italian art, starting with the first Renaissance up to the Neoclassicism: main artists and their drawings; techniques and their developments; analysis of literary sources and documents. The first part of the lessons is introductive and comprehensive of the history of drawing from Middle Ages to Neoclassicism. Beside to the analysis of techniques, the leading exponents of the italian drawghtsmanship and its main schools will be examined. Drawing’s typologies and features will be explained as well as the concepts related to them, also in relation to the connected activities of drawing collecting and connoisseurship. Particular attention will be given to the graphic production in Rome during the 16th century, especially to Michelangelo and Raphael.
The course is divided into two parts: 1) Institutional part, "Introduction to Iconography and Iconology". This part of the course is dedicated to the history of the discipline through its protagonists (Aby Warburg, Fritz Saxl, Erwin Panofsky, Edgar Wind, Rudolf Wittkower, Frances Yates, Ernst Gombrich) and the theoretical, doctrinal and methodological principles of iconography and iconology. 2) Monographic part, "'Imagines deorum'. Pagan gods in mythographic sources and mythological art from the Renaissance to the Early Baroque age". This part of the course is devoted to the literary and artistic reception of Greco-Roman and Oriental deities in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Symbolic attributes and iconographic variants will be examined in the light of both archaeological evidence and textual sources, where the main allegorical, philosophical and astrological readings of the ancient pagan gods will be traced. Particular attention will be paid to medieval and renaissance mythographers (Vatican Mythographers, Giovanni Boccaccio, Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, Vincenzo Cartari, Natale Conti, etc.), whose legacy persists in Renaissance and Baroque culture. The specific terminological and lexical repertoire used by modern sources to indicate the genres of profane and mythological art ('fabula', 'historia', 'poetry', etc.) will also be studied. Prominent examples analysed during the course include: Botticelli's mythological allegories for the Medici, those in the 'Studioli' of Alfonso d'Este in Ferrara and his sister Isabella d'Este in Mantua, Raphael and Michelangelo's pagan deities, Titian's 'poesie', mythological programmes of the Casino of Pius IV in the Vatican Gardens and the Villa d'Este in Tivoli (Pirro Ligorio), of the Farnese Palace in Caprarola (Zuccari), of the Farnese Gallery in Rome (Carracci), of the Casino Ludovisi in Rome (Caravaggio?), of the Ruspoli-Rucellai Palace in Rome (Jacopo Zucchi) and of the 'Triumph of Divine Providence' (Pietro da Cortona) in Palazzo Barberini, as well as mythological subjects sculpted by Gianlorenzo Bernini.
