Villa Mondragone is the Congress and Representation Centre of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Located in Monte Porzio Catone, between Frascati and the Tusculan Hills, the historic complex has served as one of the University's principal representative venues since 1981, hosting conferences, institutional meetings, cultural events and other academic and public initiatives.
The Villa dates back to 1573, when Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps commissioned architect Martino Longhi the Elder to develop a residence on the remains of an ancient Roman villa. It subsequently became a residence of Pope Gregory XIII, from whose heraldic dragon the name Mondragone derives.
Villa Mondragone also has particular historical significance as the place where Gregory XIII promulgated the papal bull Inter gravissimas, initiating the reform that introduced the Gregorian calendar. Over the following centuries the complex was associated with the Borghese family, Paolina Bonaparte and the Society of Jesus before being acquired by the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 1981.
Today, the Villa combines its role as a university congress and representation centre with the preservation and promotion of its architectural, artistic and historical heritage.
